About Kara Powell:
Dr. Kara Powell is the Executive Director of the Fuller Youth Institute (FYI), a faculty member at Fuller Theological Seminary, and Fuller's Chief of Leadership Formation. Named by Christianity Today as one of “50 Women You Should Know,” Kara serves as a Youth and Family Strategist for Orange, and also speaks regularly at parenting and leadership conferences. Kara is the author or coauthor of a number of books, including Growing Young, Growing With, The Sticky Faith Guide for Your Family, Sticky Faith Curriculum, Can I Ask That?, Deep Justice Journeys, Deep Justice in a Broken World, Deep Ministry in a Shallow World, and the Good Sex Youth Ministry Curriculum. Kara lives with her husband Dave and their three children, Nathan, Krista, and Jessica, in Southern California.

Jeff Martin is an FCA Executive Director and founder of Fields of Faith which has become the largest annual national outreach event in the history of The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, exceeding 250,000 participants each year. He recently released his book, “Empower: The 4 Keys to Leading a Volunteer Movement,” which we will get to hear about and discuss more on today’s podcast. Martin received his Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He lives in Kansas City, MO with his wife Julie and has three grown children AJ, Ashleigh and Alexis.
About Nathan Smith:
- Nathan has served as a volunteer youth leader and full-time youth leader for 19 years.
- Fun fact, he was a pitcher in college at Central Christian College.
- Nathan also loves coaching: coaching students in sports, coaching students to follow Jesus, and serves as a youth ministry coach with Multiply Ministries.

About Derwin Gray:
Derwin met his wife, Vicki, at Brigham Young University. He played for the BYU Cougars football team. They have been married since 1992 and have two children.
After graduating from Brigham Young University, Derwin played professional football in the NFL for five years with the Indianapolis Colts (1993-1997) and one year with the Carolina Panthers (1998). During that time, he and Vicki began their journey with Christ and experienced God’s faithfulness and direction as He moved their hearts to know Him and make Him known.
Derwin and Vicki began an itinerant speaking ministry in 1999, One Heart At A Time Ministries. Derwin went on to graduate magna cum laude from Southern Evangelical Seminary with a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree, with a concentration in Apologetics, where he was mentored by renowned theologian and philosopher, Dr. Norman Geisler.
Following God’s call on their lives and their desire to shepherd people towards transforming their world through the mission of Christ, the Lord transitioned Derwin from his primary role of itinerant speaker to serving as the Lead Pastor of Transformation Church in January of 2010. Coupling his dynamic speaking style with a shepherd’s heart, his intense passion for seeing lives and culture transformed is both contagious and inspiring.
In 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Southern Evangelical Seminary. In 2018, he received his Doctor of Ministry in the New Testament in Context at Northern Seminary under Dr. Scot McNight.
In addition to his role at Transformation Church, Derwin teaches at conferences nationwide. He is the author of Hero: Unleashing God’s Power in a Man’s Heart (2010), Limitless Life: You Are More Than Your Past When God Holds Your Future (2013), Crazy Grace for Crazy Times Bible Study (2015), The High-Definition Leader (2015), and The Good Life: What Jesus Teaches About Finding True Happiness (2020).z

About Mark:
Mark Matlock has been working with youth pastors, students, and parents for more than two decades. He is currently the president of WisdomWorks a consulting firm dedicated to helping individuals, churches and faith centered organizations leverage the transforming power of wisdom to accomplish their mission. Mark is the former Executive Director for Youth Specialties (YS) and creator of the PlanetWisdom student conferences.
He has written more than twenty books for teens, including the Wisdom On… series, Living a Life That Matters, Smart Faith and Don’t Buy the Lie. Most recently, Mark has authored three books for parents: Real World Parents, Raising Wise Children, and Ideas for Parents. Mark and his family live in Texas where they attend Irving Bible Church where Mark was ordained and serves as a teaching pastor. When he’s not traveling, he and enjoys cooking for family and friends.
